Re: Developer Blog
Trigger Happy, you haven't read it properly either. Shareware is commonly found in two forms. One form has "certain features only available after the license is purchased". The other form is "a full version but for a limited trial period of time." This clearly falls into category...

Filipe, it's exactly how it worked on the old forum. You cannot modify people's work unless you get permission.

Re: Developer Blog
@Glen: The "nothing comes for free" is obviously rubbish; GeneRally 1.0 came completely for free. I don't even remember there being any donation link for it. @kuba: Fantastic, you've proved my point perfectly. "Shareware is usually offered either with certain features only available a...

Re: Developer Blog
And people need to stop with this "They don't like how much this is going to cost, and the fact that this is a total change of direction? They must be ungrateful" rubbish. GeneRally has always been freeware. Now, it will become shareware (Trigger Happy's quibbles with semantics aren't accu...

Re: Developer Blog
XYY's comments about the structuring of things are *exactly* what the Kickstarter should be being used for, and that is something I would be able to fully support, rather than the current mess.

Re: Developer Blog
I didn't say that they have to continuously work on GeneRally, did I? Or that they had to continue working on the old version? That's the whole bloody point about the 5 year wait... And in no way is this a necessity. And that ten-year-development case, I'm assuming you're referring to Duke Nukem For...

Re: Developer Blog
We waited far more than 5 years for GeneRally 1.05 to be updated to 1.10. The comments that basically say "well things may get a bit rocky without money" don't wash.

Yes, donations, which if you actually read what I've wrote, I've said all along that they've been receiving those... jeez.

Re: Developer Blog
OpenTTD is open source, but as I said, the very early versions were done by a small team. The only source code available for Racer is absolutely ancient, and is barely relevant to the current version. The argument is relevant, because the basic game was done by very small teams (or, in the case of r...

Re: Developer Blog
OpenTTD is, but it was initially done by a very small group of people. Racer is most definitely not open source, and I don't know where you got that from.

Re: Developer Blog
Of course they're not Turn 10 Studios or Polyphony Digital, nor did anyone say they were. However, there are plenty of indie devs out there putting out very good games for absolutely nothing. OpenTTD is one example, racer being another - long term projects that have never needed Kickstarter, or peop...

Re: Developer Blog
Well, the entire impression of "we need this money to keep living" implied that you had left your jobs. Since you haven't, that reinforces the "this is for profit" point far more. The only reason you won't profit is because you set an unrealistic goal on the Kickstarter...

Re: Developer Blog
No one says you should spend your own money. That's the entire point; you've moved away from the minimalistic freeware roots in a dramatic way. No one asked you to take this on as a full-time job, and no one asked you to start charging above and beyond what this game is worth. And frankly, I'm not s...

Re: Developer Blog
There are far bigger games that are coming out as freeware, or around this price point, and what happens when the Kickstarter fails? Does the price go up through the roof? You would need 3125 people paying the minimum amount to reach the target. Even those who can afford more simply won't be able to...

Re: Developer Blog
GeneRally 1.0 was made without a single penny of investment by a community. I'm sorry, but in this day and age, these arguments just don't wash. Take Racer, for example. A free racing simulation, which took a lot more work and they programmed the game engine and pretty much everything in it. Here, G...

Re: Developer Blog
GeneRally will end up going where TrackMania is now; a stupid business decision essentially killing off the community.

Re: Developer Blog
Sorry, but I simply cannot support this. GeneRally is freeware, and it should always be that. Having a paid-for version completely destroys that, regardless of the exact feature sets of both versions. GeneRally 1.0 was made for the love of it; GR 2.0 is clearly being made as a for-profit enterprise,...

GeneRally is definitely an indie game, it's not being published by any publisher at all, let alone one of the big ones.

I didn't realize it was only going to last for a month, but it will be a minor miracle if you get £25k in a month.

Re: Developer Blog
@ Luke: I don't think no of registrations here at forum is anyhow relevant, I'd rather be interested in info, on how large base the decision was made (no of submitted surveys). The 25000, well, in which time frame to reach it? Otherwise it looks like a quite modest goal in comparison with other gam...

Re: Developer Blog
Although I understand where you're coming from, I would be surprised if you hit £25k, let alone the higher figures. We have 4350 members, yes, but perhaps 100 or 200 are actually active, and many of those can't afford to donate anything, like me (a broke student). And you're not likely to get an ave...
