Changes affecting the game physics since GeneRally 1.05

Post by RudyOosterndijk »

I have been working on throwback competitions lately. In this case 'throwback' means running the old competition including the same tracks, cars and settings, but in GeneRally 1.2c instead of the original and often outdated version.

However, I found that, on several occasions, my best laps just would not compare to the old records that I set in 1.05 or 1.10. In other words, my lap times in 1.20c are marginally yet noticeably slower virtually all of the time.

In order to eliminate some rusty driving skills from the equation, I went on and ran the same configurations in both 1.10 and 1.20c - just to find roughly the same pattern. On a very subjective note, I find the Formula to have just a little more grip in 1.10, especially on AleksiNir's Friden Park at 0-settings. Unfortunately, this observation is so limited that I can not extrapolate any general rule or develop an idea on what might have caused the slight difference that I think I perceived.

What is the current state of knowledge about this matter? Have there been any known changes to the game or the peripherals that might have affected the original physics at some point between 1.05 and 1.20?

Okay, I noticed this too. I'm more than certain that in 1.05 at least, if you are driving solo with no other AI or other players that it ignores some rule sets like fuel mass and tyre wear but I can't confirm that.

Thanks for the swift reply, Crowella!

What I do know is that the game cranks the grip values (and more?) up to the max in what is called "timetrial" mode, that is without anyone else on track. But I have never heard about fuel mass and tyre wear. Anyway, I ran 0/0/0/0 settings in both 1.10 and 1.20c, so that should have made no difference to my tests and, thus, my perception. :worried:

Hmm, such otherwise unexplainable results could be caused by change in simulation framerate, I don't know if it was altered but that's a possibility. Otherwise, maybe some input-related thing, like input smoothing? The game was ported to SDL so they had to go through input handling rewrite I guess.
