GR Daytona 500 - Discussion

Post by Haruna »

Some people were supremely bummed over how Thunder Alley got canceled.

I am also bummed, but I also have another idea stemming from it: a "Real" Daytona 500 in GR.

Cars:
- Same TA-01 from the Thunder Alley series, but we'll only use the "Plate" setup this time

Tracks:
- Daytona Superspeedway by Andrea Tibiletti - with modifications to AI line to make them faster and tougher

# of Races:
Due to limits of GR, two. This is to simulate the "Competition Caution" that has become a part of NASCAR events lately:
50 laps race, to determine your starting position.
150 laps race, drivers load save-game -> start in qualifying position using modified tracks.
This will be the format for the race.

AI strength settings: Likely to be 115+ on average

Log-in: Has to be.

Hoping for: A field of at least 20 entrants.

Without any drafting in GR, I fear it could be more than a bit boring... Maybe do a similar event on a somewhat more interesting track? Darlington (Southern 500) or Bristol, perhaps?

I had luck to race once Jo.sk's Indy 500 on 200 laps, it was amazing experience. So if you'll try something like that with Daytona, I'm surely in.

BTW AFAIK Daytona is 2.5 mi too, so 2.5 x 200 = 500. 250 laps would be 625 mi.

200 as compromise and since I messed up my maths regarding race distance.

Should those cars really kick their backside out that much? :scared:

EDIT: I should also add that I would be interested although I'm a bad oval racer...

It sounds interesting, but I'm not sure if I can manage to have one free hour (or how long does it take) for making my race at once... But well, it should work. ;)

I don't like ovals but it's a special event so I'm interested even though I'm not promising anything before I know about the schedule and so on.

Hannu, who art in Finland, Räbinä be thy name. Sim racers come, races are won, at Agari, as at Xupong. Give us this day our version 1.06, and forgive us all our impatience, as we race those who challenge against us. Lead us not into boredom, but deliver us from work. For thine is the GeneRally, and the AI, and the race cars. Amen!

This competition looks very interesting and all, but to be honest in my opinion 200 laps of oval racing is veeeeeeery boring in generally, and because of this I would surely not take part. For me, would be fun enough to make it two qualifying races of 10 laps in one week and the main event in the following week with something like 30 laps. With this settings maybe would even work well a small championship with races at Daytona, Indy, Charlotte and Bristol or something like that.

OK, Options Tool doesn't work for v1.10 on my end... here's what I'm thinking:
NASCAR throws out "competition cautions" early in the race, usually well before the halfway point.
In our case we can have a short race (50 laps) to determine the qualifying order, then the 150 lap race (my Daytona is set up so that 100 KM = 150 laps).

How is everyone on this issue?

I added a poll.

Because GR 1.10C doesn't work with Options Tool, I have to split up the race into slightly shorter segments.

Due to GRC, Track of the Month, and other major series starting up, this has been postponed so as not to conflict with current series.

If you have the spare time anyway, why not change it to a real Daytona 500? Twin 125s, Shootout :)

Here's what you do. Cover the entire track in snow, and then race with 5 AI drivers. It only works well for about 2 laps, though. But it's a lot of fun.

On a more serious note, I thought Jo's Indy 500 to be quite interesting, so why not at Daytona? It's too bad it can't be exactly 200 laps. Since as a special event that would seemingly be ideal. I imagine the lap times would be relatively quick, and therefore would be somewhat shorter event than the Indy 500. But 50/150 could work. I like that "yellow flag" idea.

Are these car physics similar to Pongo's cars there were used in the old GRASCAR series? (I'm showing my age and also my absence...)

As far as a date, if it's busy now, why not in January when it's close to the actual Daytona 500? Or is that a worse time? Or maybe people don't want to wait :D

Why not to have now Daytona 500 2011 and in February during regular term 2012? :D

Anyway, when is going to be opened the sign up? I really cannot wait. :)

Hey bg,

The Thunder Alley cars are very similar to the GRASCAR series cars. The Plate TA-01 and the Plate GRASCAR are almost exactly the same in performance (though the TA-01 is much faster down a really long straight). Normal setups are a bit slower than a GRASCAR over a single lap because of reduced power (1200 for TA-01 vs. 1400+ in GRASCAR). I think you'll feel right at home.

@Ivo:

I am starting the sign-up phase in November, since I'm busy throughout October.
