No, it hasn't. Windows Vista and 7 have DVD codecs installed by default.

Apparently they were in most versions of 7, not Vista: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... yback-help

But VLC will play them, so IMO it's really not a big deal - who uses Windows Media Player these days anyway?

You're not reading that properly; only the very basic versions of Windows Vista and 7 lack the codecs, whilst all versions of Windows 8 are missing them. Vista Home Premium (which I had, by the way) and 7 Premium upwards all feature them. I would imagine that most of the current free players will rely on the previously-standard Windows codecs, VLC excepted of course.

As for Windows Media Player, I still use it, and I'm not a big fan of VLC. I have CyberLink PowerDVD 10 and Aiseesoft Blu-Ray Player, and still use WMP for DVDs, although the latter is required for my Blu-rays.

Better desktop and Start Menu features, boot-to-desktop, DirectX 11.2, support for 3D printers (!), oh, and the ability to set your desktop background as your Start Menu background.

Though strangely Microsoft only offers this update from the Windows Store instead of the usual Windows Update feature.

Just in case any of you aren't yet aware, if you're gaming, do NOT get Windows 8.1 - it will totally ruin everything with a fair few games.

Minor mouse-lag issues, especially on FPS games. Not really a big deal for me.

My mouse is fixed at a very low DPI, and seeing that people have been making such a fuss about it, I decided to try it on Metro 2033. And indeed it is - mouse movement seems to be MUCH faster than what it's supposed to be, which is kinda useful to me (I guess?).

No fixes for it yet. :worried:

PSA: For those who want to update to Windows 8.1: remember the two-week rule.

This year i've got a new computer, part by part I've the build by myself for the first time which is not good since I'm no expert, but help of some tutorial videos. A few more details in the spoiler. (Otto helped on which part to buy although I had to buy some different ones due to the "lack of products on stock")
Motherboard: GigaByte 78LMT-S2
Processors: AMD FX 4300 Black Edition 3.8Ghz Quad Core
PSU: Corsair VS350 350W
Video card: AMD Radeon HD 7750 1GB
Memory: Corsair 4GB DDR3
Hard drive disk: Seagate 500GB
Fan: 1 extra fan at the back of the cabinet for "exhausting purposes".

Screen is a recycled one from the old computer, same goes for the keyboard and speakers.
The mouse is a cheap one that won't work for more than 3 months, I'll try to get a Logitech.
Yet I did not make it work fine for more than 4 days, I'm facing a lot of problems with it: DVI/VGA adapter, wireless internet card, bad quality cabinet, etc. I still getting some problems with the screen and some beeps while starting the computer.

With all those problems, I've decided to call it HAL...

"Can't you work properly you piece of junk?!"
"I'm sorry. I'm affraid I can't do that."

I ask some little stupid question: Did you install motherboard and graphic card drivers correct?

I think I did because it worked for a while, but suddenly it stopped to show any image when using the DVI/VGA adapter, so I think that the problem is the adapter or the graphic card's DVI port.

EDIT: Here is the pic of how it looks when I try the VGA.

Edit: I got 8 DIMMs (512MBx7 / 2GBx1)
slots 1: 512MB x2
slots 2: 512MB x2
Dual line.. But,
slots 1: 512MB x2
slots 2: 512MB + 2GB
Is the choice not good? (it's single line???)

I think you should have bought 2x2GB instead... RAM is so cheap lately!

As for my computer, I think I need to upgrade soon...it's running quite hot and loud lately, and not playing new games so well (considering I made it over 3 years ago). Actually, I'm waiting for the price of Bitcoins to collapse, so graphics card prices will be cheaper... >_>

I should have got the same DIMMs. But, those parts in the photo, I got all of them from my friend, and didn't buy them (apart from one power-supply). BTW, in the front side tower-cases, that is a security-system's a motherboard (not PC board). So the board cannot yet do the boot, then me and my friend study it now. Anyway, all mostly are junk parts.. :sweatdrop:

The work was finished for my junk PC
OS: Win XP Pro SP3
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2
Dual Core Processor 4200+ 2.20GHz
RAM: 512MB x4 (1.87GB)
HDD: 250GB IDE/ 250GB S-ATA/ 250GB S-ATA
PC Amplifier/ DVD
550W Power supply

It's those 2 parts that I bought,
the power supply (30 US dollar by 102 yen)
a switch for the back panel's fan (3.3 US dollar)

PentiumⅢ 933MHz (Socket 370) 4 electrolytic-capacitors of the motherboard were exchanged, and GeForce 2 VGA
PentiumⅢ 500MHz (Slot 1) and RADION 7000 VGA

It's been a couple years, so I'm putting together a new computer...

CPU: Intel i5-4430
GFX: Radeon R9 280X
Motherboard: ASRock Extreme3 Z87
Hard drive: 2TB + 500GB (from current computer) + 128 GB SSD
RAM: 4 x 2GB (from current computer)
Case: Antec P100
Power supply: Rosewill HIVE 750W

I've been looking around for a lot of good deals, and I think I came out pretty good... the new parts are less than $600 total, I think...

@bduddy: Wow, quite good stuff you'll have in your PC. Only thing you could add is more RAM memory, but it's not necessary ATM, however 6 GB would be recommended (cause I don't think you won't play in the new-storng-PC games). Also make sure e.g. RAM have fast bus (about rest I think you don't need to care about fast working with together)
