New domain of our forum (again)

Hello guys.

Since now we're on new domain - forum.generally-racers.com. Unfortunately we didn't manage to be as perfectly coordinated as we wished, so I'm sorry if we caused you any confusion. BTW the change affects also the CoM, ToM, JE and Alt. page sites, but any links are not going to be broken (you'll be redirected). As I told in support forum, purpose of this change is to allow some better relocating the stuff between servers to free James' hands, he needed it for some things he plans with the official site. So although it's obviously a temporal inconvenience, we're sure, that it'll pay off in future. :-)

If you'll experience any troubles related to the switch, feel free to ask in support forum or via email (more in announcement in top of the page) for help.

Hmm, curious... hopefully this will mean more stuff on the "home page" soon! Just one thing I noticed, the JE link in the top-right is still to the old URL...

I think it's very annoying that all links go to the old version now where I can't really seem to make the automatic login. Any solution for this or do I manually have to edit the link every time?

Sorry, but what do you mean precisely? :) If you click on an ''old'' link of a thread/reply here (like when you click on somebody's link to a reply/thread in a signature or in G-Tracks), it'll send you automatically on that place under new domain, no new login or anything is needed. If it doesn't do so, you didn't delete all the cookies and still have some old one somewhere in your browser.

BTW Tested and verified on Tuomo, who was observing same issue. :)

Okay, I cleared the cache again and so far it looks better. If I experience any further problems, I'll say it

Wait, are we still an unofficial forum or not? I'm confused. xD

I'd say that with separating the domains the answer for similar question is now even clearer than before, isn't it. :)

I think it's daft that anyone would even consider moving the forum elsewhere instead of making this one an official forum, but that's my opinion. xD

It may not look entirely logical right now, but actually it's more or less our common long-term goal. :-)

Also we didn't move the forum anywhere, we're still on same server. ;)

Well, regardless, this should be the official forum simply because everyone is here already, and every time you move a forum, you lose users. But that's just my opinion ;)

Completely agree Luke, especially considering the efforts of many to re-upload old files etc. But I'm sure the powers that be have considered all this.

You're right guys, this isn't entirely the best thing, which can be done with a website, but we believe, that this all is just one of several steps, which will lead later to an end with directly opposite effect than these temporal short-term troubles, which this one change causes right now.

Just to lend some support to Ivo here - this forum is integral to GR's future :) We gather all our bug reports, feature requests, etc. from this forum - we don't see any other suitable place to do that. The primary reason for separating the domains is simply so that Ivo & co. can maintain full control over the forum (which we believe is important, as they do an excellent job of it) and Markku and I can maintain full control over the GeneRally website. Previously, this would have required one or other of us to compromise, which we now don't need to do. :)

All the old forum and sub-domain links continue to work, and will do for the foreseeable future - this was a fundamental requirement when we considered changing the domains, so that all content could remain accessible. Furthermore, the link to this forum on the main GeneRally website is still prominently displayed so that people finding the game for the first time, can find the forum at the same time. I don't see any immediate reason why this should change!

All-in-all, a lot more thought and consideration goes on behind the scenes than may be apparent at first. GR wouldn't have the following it has today without the Ivo & co's hard work and perseverance - it would be mind-boggling to cut that hard work out of the equation ;)

If I'm reading this correctly, then I presume there is no intention of setting up an "official" forum at present? If so, I view that to be sensible - and I do agree, now you've explained it, the domain split does make sense. I do not doubt the fact that a lot of consideration of things goes on behind the scenes, I just hope GeneRally continues to grow and that we get that new version soon :p

No, you're reading it wrong, the intention is here at present - to do it as soon as possible in relation to set priorities of various things, which need to be done. Official forum is only one of many. ;)

As far as Markku and I are concerned, at the moment there is no need for us to have a forum run directly by us... Ivo & co. fit the role perfectly. As Ivo says, an "official" forum is way down on the agenda right now (far more important things to do). I suppose it's a bridge we'll cross if and when we come to it, but not without first discussing it with Ivo and Tuomo :)

Don't you think you could remove the announcement of the 7th May?
Announcement (7th May 2012)
We switched the forum to domain http://forum.generally-racers.com/. If you use automatic login and experience anything odd while your visit here, delete cookies in settings of your browser and log in again, please. We're sorry for this temporal inconvenience.
Yeah, there'll be some persons still who experience problems but I don't know if it's still worth to keep... ;)

When we switched domain previously without a such visible notification, I was experiencing individual people in trouble and helping them to get their old accounts back under control for about 3/4 of year since the switch, so I'd like to keep it there now until about New year. :-)
