GRHMEdit (GeneRally HMap Editor) by Mlynki

This is probably most advanced Hmap editor in GeneRally. It's made by Mlynki (mlynki at gmail.com). The tool is free.

Details about the tool:
GeneRally HMap Editor is a height map editor for the game GeneRally. There is an original track editor for the game which is good, but limited when it comes to terrain height map editing. So I wrote a program for this specific purpose. It works in full 3D and since I added various functions to it it is also useful for other things apart from height map editing.
Program features
Interface: GUI, english
• 2D top down view + editing in full 3D
• several tool types for terrain modelling with configurable strength, area size and with an option to create own 'pen' shapes.
• opens BMP and GeneRally-native TRK formats, saves BMP or TRK
• surface is displayed using colors depending on height or using texture from TRK or BMP file
• display and edit objects
• ability to see the terrain from first-person perspective (driver or someone standing on the surface)
• undo/redo
• more advanced tools for track editing: gradient tool, track shift, modify global height/height range
• screenshot tool, edit in-game view, edit track author data
• +other options and settings

Mlynki
It should run fine on up to Windows 10 at least (runs on mine anyway).
To install: Download the .zip, unpack into any directory of your choice, and run the .exe file.
To uninstall: Just delete the folder.

Update Jan. 2024
My website is going down soon. Since there are still some occasional downloads of this tool, I'm attaching the latest version here. It is release v2.02 from 30.9.2013 compatible with GeneRally v1.2b.
GRHMEdiE.zip
v2.02 from 30.9.2013 (last release)
(678.96 KiB) Downloaded 20 times
There will be no more updates of this tool. Thank you all for using it and for feedback.
Also thank you for the "Generally Wizard award" you awarded me for this tool, I appreciate it.
All the best guys.

Hello everyone,
just FYI I have updated GRHMEdit to handle objects added in GeneRally 1.10 (and a few more minor changes, i.e. world size up to 255 - see the manual for full list).
The version at the top is now out of date. This is v1.7.

Outdated attachment deleted, author of 1st post changed (you can edit it like you need). :bg:

Thank you for the update, it's superb. :heyea: Just when now I look on the today-released 1.10b, it needs include the 1.10 trk type. :yummy:

Hello again.
This update of GRHMEdit does not save the TRK file version according to GeneRally v1.10b (that is, it saves tracks with new objects as version 1.05). I will need to do another update. Sorry - I have bad timing.

Howdy.
GRHMEdit is updated again and should now be OK.
It is still version 1.7, but it saves TRK files using version 1.10 as GeneRally 1.10b (rather than 1.05 as GeneRally 1.10).

I'm not sure what the problem is...
If you download the file and it is corrupted, just download it again. This sometimes happens for some reason. I always check that the file can be downloaded properly.
Once you get a ZIP file, unzip everything in it to some directory of your choice and simply run the .exe file.
To open a track use the buttons in the toolbar at top left (yellow for height map, red for track). Check manual if you are not sure.

Just wanted to say thank you for this program, I've used it with almost all of my tracks, it's great! I haven't played around with the new version much, but I noticed a colour issue (or is it a feature?), but I'm not entirely sure what causes it. When I'm editing hmap the 3d window momentarily shows bright green colour. I really can't explain well, I've attached a picture. I just know the old version didn't do that.

Also, when exploring the program folder I saw you included some tracks. I know some of your tracks, but I don't remember seeing those yet. Are they new? And are they TE only? You didn't mention them anywhere AFAIK.

Hello egamad,
I'm glad you like the program and find it useful.
The new version does have a color "issue", but it is a feature, which I added. The bright green is intended to indicate areas, where the height is at the limit. If you try to make it any higher or lower, it won't go and perhaps more importantly, if you try to increase/decrease a height of an entire area where part of it is at the limit, you will end up distorting the shape of that area. It is intended to be a warning. I am not sure whether this is disruptive or not, but it shouldn't be difficult to make it optional if required.

I did include some new tracks, and removed some older ones. As a part of testing the editor I simply have to use it to see whether it works, so I play around and create some tracks (also for fun). They are done using the original track editor and GRHMEdit. They are not mentioned anywhere simply because I don't think they are worth mentioning. They are not intended to show off as tracks, just as examples of what GRHMEdit can do. They are quite simple, not very precise, lack nice textures and fail some other criteria, such as constant road width. I didn't take much effort to tune the AI line either. But I don't mind.

I'm not sure how mlynki feels about direct links to his files, so I'll say:

On his website, see the first post. It's quite intuitive:

Klick these symbols in the following order and you get there:
  1. British flag
  2. PC mouse
  3. Scroll down for GRHMEdit and in the entry then klick on
  4. >> (or the picture on the right)
  5. Toothed wheels
to get the binaries. ;)

The symbol with sheets of paper is for the source files which are irrelevant for the normal user.

A quick word to mlynki:
Thank you so much for this tool! It saves me from lots of grey hairs trying to get the banking of corners right and is wonderful to tweak tracks with little bumps etc. The 3D edit function is absolutely perfect! :)

Thanks Tonga.

As for the links, I prefer a link to here
http://www.mlynki.wz.cz/english/_eprog.htm
It's a bit selfish, but I like website visitors to see what else is there when they visit.
The link is not as direct as it could be, but searching for "GRHMEdit" or scrolling down shouldn't be that difficult. It theoretically allows me to internally re-organize the website pages if I need to, but practically as I have mostly seen direct links to the program page, I can't really do anything now. :weep:

Well, I actually prefer just the link to your website - otherwise I would have missed your excellent "OTTDLandView" for example, or your City Traffic Simulator which comes in very very handy for another project I am currently working on. :bg:

Your OS, hardware details, if you were doing changes in software / hardware between last successful start and present situation, which version of editor it is etc.
