Generally Online: maybe a strange and primitive way but....

It works! :bsmile:
I'm not cheating!!!

Hi, my name is Andrea and I play generally since summer 02. :bg:

A lot of time ago I made some gt cars, then I abandoned the game for a lot of years

Few days ago I rediscovered it, found a way to play on win7 and really apreciated new tracks and cars but...
Online mode still remained holy grail and the source code is still unknown...

Then I discovered an utility and.... Oh my God... maybe it should work!!!

The way could look maybe bizzarre but is good to make some online racing with friends! (tested!)

And so let's introduce the "Andrea's way to play generally online"

The key is the incredible "team viewer" remote desktop free software!
This incredible utility makes it possible to share a remote desktop among many people with an incredible level of performance

to download:
http://www.teamviewer.com

And so? what do we wanna do???? Of course...simulate a local match!

1) the host of the game installs teamwork and properly configure it: improve connection speed, allow complete interaction among remote users , reduce generally resolution a bit (1024x768 is good), toggle shadows and vsync off
2) other racers don't need teamwork installation, the program can start without it, linking to the host via a simple authentication (computer id and a shared password)
3) now the host has to configure controls!
Since the keyboard will be the shared peripheral, He and maybe his "friends at his home" will have to use gamepads
now we have to configure the keyboard, making it suitable for remote players!
little trouble: character keys don't work so...

second player will use arrows
third will use home end page down and del
fourth will use the numpad

In this way up to three players can play remotely :heyea:

Sound can be added but, of course, we'll prefer the faster connection possible so... remote players will race in silence!

how it works??? quite good! I tested it with two friends of mine, not gr addicted, and we have a nice race! With a good connection the only difference with a local game is a light flickering of cars... but ... who cares!!! (ok, can be a little unstable sometimes but still remains playable)

Obviously you have to trust the people you're playin with and there's a lot of cheating possibility since everyone can control other player's car!

Try it! Let's discuss and let me know what do you think!

bye bye and hail to Team viewer ... probably the best utility of the last ten years!

Does anyone want to post their info and test this? I have a very good connection, so I can try if that's a problem, but I also have the graphics bug, so I'd love to do it on someone else's computer if possible...

I've test it on a LAN and it works but indeed there's flickering of cars.

have you removed shadows? It is important to sensibly reduce flickering

After all, is only a nerdly attempt to obtain the holy grail of gr!

Yes and it was drivable.

IT REALLY WORKS! I tested it with Gera and Owsianny (from GRPL) and it works but with big lagzzzz... I mean lags but I don't know what it really is. Maybe to slow computer or to slow connection...

Hmm... maybe some other remote desktop software would work better? I know there are others, maybe someone with 2 computers could test them...

There was no question if it works or not, because it is obvious... but lags remain a huge problem.

Obviously it's laggy... I'don't know if other softwares works better, I know that teamwork is one of the most performing and, more important, allows interaction between more than two users.

You can play with more than 2 users, but there is much problem to play with more than 2 ppl without lags.
