Remember the racers who have passed away

Post by MD »

It is a very sad weekend. First we have lost the Dakar racer Jean-Michel Baron who fallen to a coma after a crash in 1986 and never woke up. He left this world yesterday after 24 years sleeping.

And today we have lost a young and talented Moto2 racer too, the 19-years-old Shoya Tomizawa. He crashed in the middle of the race in Misano on a very unfortunate way. He has taken to the circuit's hospital but the doctors can't save his life.

The last week's MotoGP races was darken by the shadows of Death too. Peter Lenz, 13 killed due to his injuries after a similar and sad crash at the Red Bull Indianapolis 250cc GP.

So I'd like to make a thread just for remember these guys, who were emerging talents and/or exemplars of us. Let's remember them in a few words on the sad anniversaries and the posthumous birthdays or say them a nice goodbye when they left us.
Please don't use emoticons in your posts just help the heroes live forever.

RIP. Shoya Tomizawa. Thoughts go to his families. :(

Didn't actually see the crash live but saw it on YouTube. It's frightening. :(

Considering the amount of shocking crashes there have been this year, it is very unfortunate that those passed away (Tomizawa was a future MotoGP champion!), but withou the massive safety reasons this list would have been far longer.

And let's not forget on Jochen Rindt. It's 40 years now.

I sometimes browse this website and give silent homage to all mentioned there. Famous or unknown, drivers, mechanics, marshals or spectators - all deserve it.

I'm so sad, that next name must included. :(

Thank you for that site. It is an appropriate one for remembering them.
And yes, let's remember to Jochen Rindt too. He was one of that classic racers who, by his talent, surely made a several little boys to get in a kart and dreaming about the Formula 1.

This has sure been a sad weekend in racing. But we really have to be glad that the safety has gone up with the speeds. Otherwise this year would have been really dark.

I read more about Peter Lenz's crash, and that really sounds like a freaky one. I hope the kid who drove over him can get over it some day.

Both of them were to young to die.

In the last weekend Peter Lens (13), now Shoya Tomizawa (19). Will be that the safety equipament to this pilots are really reliable?

Particularly I think the Formula Indy very dangerous and without prepare to act in accidents.
Ex: when the car of Simona de Silvestro caught fire, the assistants of race they took too long (about 1 minute) to remove the head protection of the car of her and they did not contain the fire quickly. In the words, the inferior categories needs to improve the safety system.

I completely agree, Indycar racing is extremely dangerous at some kinds of ovals. Who watched the race at Chicago surely noticed that a small contact between the cars, that were all driving in the same 'pack', veeery close with more than 220 mph, would have terrible consequences. Also, some drivers there are not prepared for any kind of motorsport. Look at Milka Duno for example :shake3:

Safety of open wheel car is fine. Those two motorbike accidents were just freak accidents, unfortunately not much to do about it. A stronger suit won't really protect you against two riders driving over you at speeds of 250kmh.

Anyhow... He has killed on the track as a motor racer and the only thing we can do now (poorly) to wish him a better being and the bike in the heaven what he always wanted to ride. That's the reason why I started this thread.

So: goodbye Shoya, we will miss you very much.

It has been 3 years since the greatly loved rally driver Colin McRae left us and the world in such a horrific way. :( So I made this "tribute" to him.
Early career
Colin started his rally career in year 1986 with Talbot Sunbeam when he entered the Scottish Rally Championship and soon made name for himself with his speed and exciting driving style. His driving style drew comparisons to Ari Vatanen who Colin had always idolised. In 1988 Colin performed a huge killing act when he won the Scottish Rally Championship in a humble Vauxhall Nova. Craving more power, his next car was Ford Sierra XR 4X4.
His first WRC event was in 1987 in Swedish Rally behind the wheel of his Nova and again two years later driving the Sierra and finishing overall 15th. Later that year he finished 5th in Rally New Zealand in a rear wheel drive Sierra Cosworth. By 1990 McRae was driving a Sierra Cosworth 4x4 and finished 6th in that year's RAC Rally, despite several accidents. 1991 saw McRae turn professional as he was signed by Prodrive boss David Richards to his Subaru team in British Rally Championship for an annual wage of approximately £10.000. He won the British Rally Championship in both 1991 and 1992 and gratuated to the Subaru factory team at World Rally Championship level.
WRC
Subaru
On his promotion for 1993, McRae initally drove the Prodrive-built Group A Subaru Legacy alongside with Finnish drivers Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola and Markku Alén. His first WRC rally win came in that car from that year's Rally New Zealand. It also was first rally win for the newly formed Subaru World Rally Team shortly before the Legacy was due to be pensioned off in the favour of the new Subaru Impreza 555. Such were the rising fortunes of his young Subaryu factory team as they competed against the TTE ran Toyotas, aided by the latter team's exclusion from the championship after the 1995 Rally Catalunya where it was discovered that the Japanese team had been using illegal turbochargers. It took only until 1995 for McRae to win the drivers title, which he secured with victory in a straight contest with his double champion team-mate, Carlos Sainz, on the season ending Rally of Great Britain. Although McRae won many specialised events such as Acropolis rally, Safari Rally, and Tour de Corse, McRae couldn't better than second place in final standings in 1996 and 1997, on both occasions behind the Finland and Mitsubishi Ralliart's Tommi Mäkinen. In 1998 he won three more rallies and placed 3rd in the standings, as well as winning The Race of Champions in Gran Canaria, the Canary Islands.
Ford
For 1999 McRae moved to BP Ford World Rally Team driving the new Ford Focus rally car. The deal saw McRae earning six million pounds over two years, which made at the time him the highest earning rally driver in history. Immediately the move was awarded with two wins, one from Safari Rally and second from Rally Portugal. The car suffered from number of shunts and realibility issues and that's why Colin finished only 6th in drivers standings. Season 2000 began with retiring from Monte Carlo Rally and 3rd place in Swedish Rally and victorious in asphalt roads of Catalunya and on gravel in Greece and post 4th in the 2000 overall standings. Midway through season 2000 the lacking reability of Ford caused that McRae was threatening to leave the team if the problems continued.

Tell me what you think? :) And :rip: Colin.

(Will continue this when I have more time. :) )

P.S. Sorry for any typos in text.

I'd like to say my opinion here. I'm not the person who is fan of tragicly-died drivers. Of course, as they arent already on this world, they need some respect (as everyone). Just some examples: Henry Surtees, Jean-Michel Baron, Peter Lenz -> They weren't very know drivers before they died.
Shoya Tomizawa -> I was watching that race and commentator said that he only has got broken leg, of course it was only gossip from paddock, and I got info about that later that day, I was pretty shocked. Maybe he was a little bit talented, but I havent ever saw some great on-track action from him.
And something about more-known drivers, Colin McRae and Ayrton Senna. Colin actually was pretty good rally driver, but he didnt get many championships, even if he was driving a really competitive car as Subaru/Ford (similar as Richard Burns). According to Ayrton, after his serious accident, everybody has forgot for ever his not so fair fighting with Alain Prost (mainly late 80's/early 90's)

So, please, dont be a blind man and dont choose just died drivers for your idols, first look at character and driving skills, later at the date of death.

I hope that I didnt hurt anyone by this post.

Maybe same thing with idolism of Villeneuve etc, though he was quite fast.

Henry Surtees was a well-known figure for those into racing. Tomizawa was a huge talent, who could have go on to win or even become a champion in MotoGP.

Colin was one of the most talented rally drivers ever (in the category Sainz, Toivonen, Kankunnen, Vatanen). He is massively respected for his driving style, for always going 120%.

I have been a fan of both Gonzalo Rodriguez and Daijiro Katoh years before they were killed, and I still feel say when I remember them passing away and thinking 'what could have been'.

Ayrton not driving fair? Maybe, have you seen him risking his life while running accross Spa to see how Comas was doing after a massive shunt? How he was one of the few drivers to visit Barrichello, hijacked a FIA car to go to Ratzenberger and putting an Austrian flag in his car to wave after winning the race? Thinking Ayrton is just known for his actions with Prost does not only show discrept to a man who changed racing and brought joy to millions of people, but is just plain stupid.

If you ask me, and don't feel offended, you are talking complete bollocks and you should think twice before writing down random stuff which is far from the truth.

I think both Alonsomania and ZeroCool are truth more or less.
I'm not a fan of passed-away racers although some of them was only "one of the racers" for me before their accidents. But I don't wanna idolize them. I only want to say them "thanks" for choosing the tracks and remember for them cause they have deserved it. IMO The Noose is doing well by his article about Colin. I don't want their death to be the main topic but their career with their successes and mistakes. Just remember for them cause they were racers, they kept somehow my (our?) dreams alive, so it's our turn now to keep them alive.
A Hungarian poet wrote that all the human beings are special and unrepeatable and when a person passes away we miss an individual piece of the world. So don't miss them completely - not as idols but as humans and foremost as racers.

That's it.

I would like to add a few to the list of remembrances:

Eric Medlen
Scott Kalitta
Blaine Johnson
"Jungle Jim" Lieberman (who ironically, after performing many dangerous stunts during his distinguished match race funny car career, died in a car crash on the Jersey Turnpike.)

As the video shows, it was often forgotten Jim Clark ran a farm in Duns, on the Scottish border region.

I wouldn't mind seeing some more names that have raced, but have passed on through more natural causes. I would add James Hunt and Vitorio Brambilla if I may be so bold.
