Sports. Active!
Re: Sports. Active!
I've been involved in soccer(/football) refereeing lately... has anyone else? Or would anyone have any questions for someone that theoretically knows about the rules? I've never been good enough to actually participate in sports, and I think refereeing is a good way to get some exercise and still be involved... >_>

Re: Sports. Active!
I haven't played football for a couple of months, as the school season has ended and I don't have a club.

I'm a referee also. I'll write up a helpful post when I am not at work.
EDIT: Now I'm not at work...
I've worked as a referee for at least four years. I've stopped this year because I had another job to commit to but I was seriously considering it again this year.
One of the things I would recommend for someone that is/becoming a referee is to get fit. You need a lot of fitness? Why? Two reasons:
1. You can keep up with play which...
2. Helps you make better, more confident decisions.
When I was refereeing, the football association for my area had training at least once a week. I would recommend attending it as much as possible. Referees require a lot of stamina to keep up. To be honest, it's probably more tiring to be an assistant referee than a referee and it will take it out on your legs. It can get tiring as well if you are doing 8 games a weekend. Then work in the evenings after.
Other things I would suggest is consistently going through the "Laws of the Game" and making sure you know it really well.
The biggest point I should make is always look confident. Sell your decisions well. Use the correct gestures and body language when both refereeing and assisting.
You can ask me any questions and I'm sure I can help answer them.

Yeah, that's the main thing I'm lacking... I'm not fit at all Selling my decisions can be tough too, especially because I'm not good in general at acting like I'm sure of something when I'm not, but I'm getting better at that. And just a couple weeks ago I got a full-time job finally, so I don't have as much time anymore... trying to figure out how much I want to do it and when...

Re: Sports. Active!
Well normally sports are on a weekend. I know a lot of people with full time jobs that referee. Some are even international pilots.
Fitness comes with time. There are many unfit referees here. It just helps to be fit. Also, it's not a matter of acting, it's being positive that your decision is correct.

Re: Sports. Active!
I also do a bit of refereeing. The first thing you need to learn IMO is to stick by your decision. Even if an entire team surrounds you, don't change your mind, you'll lose control of the entire game if you do as you will lose both team's respect

Re: Sports. Active!
I know, I'm hoping to start refereeing on weekends again... just trying to figure out my new job, first. And getting some exercise was actually one of the main reasons I started refereeing in the first place, so hopefully it will help... I don't know about "being positive" my decisions are correct, though, there's always stuff people are unsure about. You just have to be able to sell it sometimes...Crowella wrote:Well normally sports are on a weekend. I know a lot of people with full time jobs that referee. Some are even international pilots.

Nicely done on the recovery, that performance kept me on my seat the whole time. It's not every day that happens.
