@FrukisCZE: You can also have a clean desktop without this  I'm btw now searching for a way to "get rid" of the two last symbols - just for beauty reasons of course ;)

At least in XP you could make a custom toolbar where you could put the icons. Then you can set it to show just when hovered over. You might have to put the icons on the desktop as "hidden" and then hide hidden files, I can't remember. Boom, everything's hidden and becomes visible when you want to click them. No need to download extra software.

There's not much point in showing my desktop anymore, as the wallpaper changes every 5 minutes and some information boxes and notes might require censoring in photoshop before I could show it... I used to be obsessive with the cleaniness of the desktop before, but now I have 7 shortcuts. Mozilla, Recycle bin, resizer.bat (for image resizing...), DS3 tool, NetBeans and Automation & BeamNG alpha starters. These are divided to two screens with the more often used on the second monitor, as that screen most likely has no full screen software on.

In Windows 7 you can right click on the desktop -> view -> show desktop icons. Uncheck this and the icons disappear :)

Yes, I already found it ;) Just had to search for a clever solution, but the Download folder is now in "send to" and the Trashbin is in the task bar ;)
@1nsane: I already once experimented with folders where the icon is completely transparent and which holds a special whitespace character. But I found this uncomfortable ;)

I also have desktop icons disabled on all of my computers. I just can't stand having my desktop cluttered with them.
