small changes in smilies interface
Hi guys.
Some surely noticed it, that I bit updated smilies system. If you click on the ''View more smilies'', a small popup window is opened. It has in top-left a dropdown box with few types of smilies, which you can browse. The ''-----'' is general group with all of them. And btw I added also few new pieces of them for our pleasure. For some of them thanks to Rich Nagel, who saved many bits of RSC collection.

Re: small changes in smilies interface
I didn't delete anything out of just one, which was replaced by piece with same theme.

Re: small changes in smilies interface
Not a big problem, but I think it would be better to put more smilies as standard (without expand), cause only few people use a 633px width browser window for surfing the web . and maybe put the most important smilies, and not the first smilies of "small smilies" (e.g. smilies like these will be used oftener than ).
and btw isn't in small animated smilies, though it's an animated one
Edit: And put the max. number of smilies to 10 or sth instead of 7 =) (this smilie is even caused by that smilie limit)

Re: small changes in smilies interface
633px width browser window? Where, please?
The window is (or is supposed to be) approx. as wide as the smilie bar on left. And at least in my browser really is.

Re: small changes in smilies interface
What I meant is that you can scale your browser window to 633px width and the smilies still take less place than the text panel in height. Every more or less modern laptop/display has at least got 1024 px width. That's why I don't think it's needed to put so few smilies there... You can at least add the same number of smilies again, it won't cause any mess in smaller resolutions
Of course, if you have got an other reason for putting so few smilies, my whole rationale is useless

Re: small changes in smilies interface
I see. Well, if we talk about just computers, no problems could be. But the forum is browsed from other devices too, which includes resolutions like 240x320, 240x237, 240x283 or 320x480 on e.g. yesterday (I looked into anonymous admin stats). And it's not just about resolutions, but lot of animated gifs can cause some performance inconveniences for them, so I think, that will be easier to put the animated smilies to recognizable separate area. And it's just pair of clicks (unless you remember the code), so it's kind of inconvenience, but it doesn't hurt so much, I believe.
And the next reason is, that the 48 default smilies is enough for basic posting, other more special smilies are just additional options, which some forums even sometimes don't include at all (like until close past e.g. Polish forum).

Re: small changes in smilies interface
I missed those edits at first:
@ BBA: You're welcome.
BTW guys, if you want, I can set, that if we'll click on the ''View more smilies'' link, the popup will be opened automatically on the page of the smaller animated smilies. Will it be then OK or at least better?
Yes, one more not too, but I wasn't able to sort them better in a working shape, so I chose them as exemptions. In this particular case maybe because originally we really had just static for few months.XYY wrote:and btw isn't in small animated smilies, though it's an animated one
This is least favourite settings ofor me (I'm not sure, how Tuomo or Herbal ). I sometimes change it in kind of waves from max. 20 (which I would personally prefer) to 7 when during few days or hours repeatedly some random child-like acting persons make me really disgusted. You're right, it's again time to increase it a bit.XYY wrote:Edit: And put the max. number of smilies to 10 or sth instead of 7 =) (this smilie is even caused by that smilie limit)

Yes, I'd prefer that setting.

Re: small changes in smilies interface
What about this idea? just make the dropdown list where you currently have the smilies (standard would be small smilies), and without a popup window.

Re: small changes in smilies interface
Would it be possible to have a per user setting for the emoticons? So that every user could choose in the User control panel which smilies to show by default. This would be really great, as most of the time I use about 10-15 favourite smilies that I would like to have accessible instantly.

Yes, it was surely missing.Madd Dogg wrote: <-- I'm still ROFLing it hard.
It's mixture of smilie and BBCode, I theoretically I know how to add it, but first I would like to solve the issue with spoilers in search.Madd Dogg wrote:EDIT: I miss a bit the smiley with the writable board from RSC
Small problem is, that turning from one sub-list to another could changes in page proportion (but it could be solved by more shorter lists). However main thing is, that I would very likely need to extensively edit the core php files of the phpbb (or at least I afraid of it). The current solution keeps the main changes in separate additional phps and changes in core files were minimal (safer solution). ATM I'm not brave enough to experiment with that.XYY wrote:What about this idea? just make the dropdown list where you currently have the smilies (standard would be small smilies), and without a popup window.
It would be very cool, but it's even more complex solution than XYY proposed, it's currently out of my skill to create whole similar menu in user control panel and force to work with all the rest of forum. However it doesn't mean, that something similar will not occur once later.egamad wrote:Would it be possible to have a per user setting for the emoticons? Hannu, who art in Finland, Räbinä be thy name. Sim racers come, races are won, at Agari, as at Xupong. Give us this day our version 1.06, and forgive us all our impatience, as we race those who challenge against us. Lead us not into boredom, but deliver us from work. For thine is the GeneRally, and the AI, and the race cars. Amen!
